Glass made a fairly late appearance in China, most probably in the Western Zhou or late Shang, with most examples being blue, light blue or green tubular decorative items, which in combination with jade and agate pieces formed part of "composite pendants" (za-pei). The main ingredients used in the manufacture of glass at that time were silicon dioxide, together with small quantities of lead and barium and so this locally produced Pb - Ba glass was quite different to the Na - Ca glass produced in the West. In the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, "dragon-fly's eye" glass beads were introduced to China from the West. From that time onwards locally produced glass, representative of which are "Marquis Sui beads" (Suihou- zhu) made in imitation of white lamb's - fat jade (yangzhi - baiyu) that has the lustre of moonlight, co- existed with foreign glass. After the Dayuezhi (possibly the Tocharian) "Western" technique of glass blowing was introduced to China in the Han - Wei period, locally produced hollow glass vessels and other items began to make their appearance.
