英文摘要：is the 50th anniversary of the death of Mr. Ma Heng. He served the Gugong Bowuyuan for 27 years, from its founding in 1925 to 1952. For 19 of those years he was the museum’s Director. This article traces chronologically his contribution over a number of different historical periods. After the museum was founded, he worked tirelessly to defend and protect the museum in its earliest years, and while he was curator of the Relics Section (Guwuguan) he made a number of noteworthy achievements. After he became Director of the museum, he took charge of the scrupulous management of the collection’s cataloguing and throughout the eight years of the War of Resistance to Japan his contribution lives for posterity because he organised the movement of the cultural relics of the collection to the south and their further dispersal to western China for safekeeping. In the course of this massive exercise he managed to organise a number of exhibitions in China and abroad. After the victory in the War of Resistance, he oversaw the reconstruction of the Palace Museum and took receipt of the scattered collections. Responding to historical needs, he thwarted the plans of the Nanjing government to ?y the treasures of the museum in Beiping to Taiwan. Ma Heng was also a diligent scholar and a distinguished epigraphist, and can be regarded as one of the founders of modern Chinese archaeology and museum management.
