The study of Tang mirrors is one of the academic subject interesting scholars both at home and abroad. There have been published a lot of works, which, however, seem to be a little short of material from dated tombs. The present paper, based on a hundred examples from such graves, makes a systematic study on the classification and periodi- zation of the Tang bronze mirror. According to their differences in decoration, the Tang mirrors are divided into 16 "classes",such as those with the Four Divinities and the twelve animals symbolizing the duodecimal cycle, with auspicious animals, with auspicious animais and grape, with Iegendary birds and auspicious animals, with intertwined flowers and birds, etc. These are subdivided into various "types" in the light of mirror shape. Thus, the circular rnir- rots are all assigned to Type Ⅰ,the multifoil to Type Ⅱ,the muitilobed to Type Ⅲ, and so forth.Again, the types are subdivided into "styles" different in the detail of decoration, which is illustrated with examples.A few discussions are made for dating the initial and prevailing stages of each class and for revealing its relation with others. A special chapter deals with the mirrors made by new techniques characteristic of the Tang period, such as silver covering, gold and silver inlay on the lacquered body,mo- ther-of-pearl inlay, etc.,as well as the dates of the beginning and prime of their working. Regarding the periodization of the Tang mirror, the author puts forward a four-phase division:The first phase belongs to the early Tang, lying approximately in the early--late 7th century, and is the formative stage of the Tang characteristic styles. The second phase, to the Tang golden age, about the late 7th to the middle 8th century, the flourishing stage of the Tang mirror, with various styles forming prismatic splendor. The third phase,to the middle Tang,ca.the mid 8th to the early 9th century, the fluctuating stage in the evolutionary course of the Tang mirror. The fourth phase,to the late Tang,ca. the early 9th to the early 10th century, the trough period of the evolution. These phases of mirrors reflect their historical background, and their decoration shows rather close relations with other decorative arts.
