The term “imperial examination” can be used in both a broad and a narrow sense. In a broad sense, it means the system adopted after the Western Han Dynasty for selecting talented individuals by different means, that is, recommending or examining (under imperial orders) talented individuals in order to confer on them government posts. In a narrow sense, it refers to the jinshi keju , that is, the jinshi examination that started in the Sui Dynasty and was used to select talented individuals by examination and confer on them government posts. The jinshi keju was initiated in the first year of the Daye reign period of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, and not during the reign of Emperor Wen. Although the jinshi examination was adopted by Emperor Yang, he never attached particular importance to this examination, and it became important only after it became increasingly influential in the political and cultural education of Chinese society.
