中文摘要：20世纪西方历史学的功能发生了转折性的变化 ,新史学的成功在于其新功能满足了社会的新需要。 2 0多年来我们一般着重于新史学的认识论和方法论 ,忽略了它所追求的功能 ,实际上其认识论和方法论是为新功能服务的。这种新功能就是“理解” ,即各阶级阶层间、各国各民族或各种文化间、现在和过去间的理解。了解西方新的“理解型”史学的成就与不足 ,有助于展望 2 1世纪西方史学的发展趋势和我国史学的发展目标。

英文摘要：A turn took place in the function of the studies of history in the West during the twentieth century. The success of the new historiography is attributed to its new functions that satisfy new social needs. We have mainly focused over more than twenty recent years on the epistemology and methodology of the new historiography in neglect of the function it pursues. In fact, its epistemology and methodology serve its new function. The new function is “understanding,” that is, understanding between different classes, between different social strata, between different nations, between different cultures, and between the present and the past. A clear knowledge of the successes and failures of the Western “understanding type” history will help us perceive the developmental trend of historical studies in the West and set up the targets of historical studies in China in the coming century.
