Through checking the translated names in the Buddhist classic Dazhengjing, a field study of the site and a synthetic analysis of relevant literature, this paper draws the conclusion that in the Chinese translations of Buddhist sutra from the Eastern Han to the Western Jin dynasty, Velu or Veluvana, the place where Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, expounded Buddhist teachings was mostly translated into Zhuyuan(竹园,bamboo garden) instead of Zhulin (竹林, bamboo grove) and that the statement asserting the story of “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” was a far-fetched reference to the Buddhist allusions is open to question. Shanyang in Henei, a place where bamboo grows from ancient times, was located between Ye City and Luoyang. During the period of Wei and Jin dynasties high officials and senior lords built their mansions and villas here, and Zhuolu City, a guarded place where Emperor Xiandi of the Eastern Han dynasty was put under house arrest was also in this area, making Shanyang politically sensitive. A visit here of the sages would be very noticeable. The Seven Sages' stay here together was very brief. The Wang family of Langya during the transition period of the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties played an important role in spreading the story of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove,” which was fixed in history through the pen of Sun Sheng.
