中文摘要：意大利吞并埃塞俄比亚后 ,英国终止了对意大利的制裁并力图恢复先前与意大利的友好关系。几经周折 ,英国先后与意大利签订了关于地中海西部维持原状的宣言和英意协定。英国的目的在于维持地中海局势的稳定并分化意大利与德国 ,但由于英国一味迁就意大利 ,反使意大利更加蔑视英国 ,英国对意绥靖政策终于破产。

英文摘要：Britain gave up its sanctions against and tried hard to resume its former cordial relations with Italy after the latter annexed Ethiopia. After a good deal of bother Britain signed a declaration with Italy maintaining the status quo in the area west of the Mediterranean Sea. The purpose of the British was to preserve stability in the Mediterranean region and alienate Italy from Germany. However, endless concessions on the part of Britain only increased Italys arrogance, and the British policy of appeasement finally broke down.
