The improvished-curve pattern is a major motif on the middle to late Western Zhou bronzes. There has so far been no sufficient work in its study, though some achievements have been reaped. The present paper, based on the research results already obtained, studies available examples of this pattern in detail. The text comprises two parts. In the first part, the author discusses the origin of this pattern, pointing out that it was evolved from the early taotie pattern and trunked-dragon design. Meanwhile, he elaborates the track of its origination and evolution. The second part is a typological systematization and study of the pattern. The available improvished curves are divided into Types A and B according to their origin. Type A originated from the taotie pattern, while Type B from the trunked-dragon design. These are further divided into sub-types and styles. Then the author researches into the popularization of various improvished curves in the mid and late Western Zhou.
