英文摘要:The Museum of the Kwangsi Chuang Autonomous Region alone has in its collection overthree hundred ancient bronze drums. In addition, there are more than two hundred suchdrums in the collections of various museums and commissions for the preservation ofancient monuments throughout the region. In most cases, their provenances are known.Others are either dated themselves or were found along with datable objects. All these areof much value to the study of the ancient bronze drums of Kwangsi. The ancient bronze drums of Kwangsi consist of four main types which can be fur-ther divided into twenty sub-types. Type A, the earliest, which can be divided into sixsub-types. Type A_1 dates from the end of the Spring and Autumn Period (5th-6th centuriesB. C.) Type A_2-A_6 range in date from the Warring States Period to the Western Tsin(5th century B. C.--early 4th century). The three sub-types of B range in date from theThree Kingdoms Period to the end of the Tang dynasty (3rd century--early 10th cen-tury A. D.). Type C with its seven sub-types dates from the Western Han to the SouthernSung (3rd century B. C.--13th century A. D.). The four sub-types of Type D all datefrom after the Sung (11th--19th centuries A. D.). Judging by the shape, decoration and other features, the ancient bronze drums of Kwangsibelong to two main groups. On group, which includes Types A and B, is found mostlyin the southern and southeastern parts of Kwangsi. The other, embracing Type C and D,is found mostly in the northern and western parts of Kwangsi. Within each group, onetype is the lineal descendant of the other. Thus, Type B was developed from Type A whileType D was developed from Type C. Like the ritual bronze vessels of the Central Plains in antiquity, the ancient bronzedrums of Kwangsi were used by the aristocrats of the minority nationalities of the regionin antiquity as symbols of their political power. Their use as common musical instruments, however, did not begin until after the Yuan Dynasty.
