The Dawenkou culture is an important culture of the lower reaches of the Huanghe river. In the region in which it was once prevalent, there are three main types of it.: namely the Dawenkou type found in Tai'an, Jining and their vicinity in the central and southern parts of Shandong Province; the Dadunzi type found in the Xu-Huai district on the north bank of the Huai River; and the Sanlihe type found in the Weifang district and Rizhao county in the eastern part of the province. The Dawenkou culture lasted for about 2000 years, and can be divided into two stages, each of which can be further divided into an earlier and a later period. The first stage consists of the early, middle and late phases of the Wangyin site, and the early and late phases of the Liulin site, with the early phases of the two as the earlier period of thefirst stage, and the middle and late phases of the two as the later period of the first stage. The early, midle, and late phases of the Dawenkou site first excavated in 1959 belong to the second stage of the Dawenkou culture, with the early and middle phases constituting its earlier period, and the late phase its later period. The Dawenkou type began about in the late period of the first stage of the culture, and in both production and cultural levels, it leads all the other types. Therefore Taishan and the surrounding area can be regarded as the center of the Dawenkou culture.Analysis of the development of principal types of pottery such as gu-shaped cup (ancient wine goblet), ding (tripod), gui (?) and hanging pot showed that the development of each one of them has its own sequence. At the same time it is found that the difference between the types of pottery produced by the end of a period and those of the preceding one is great, but not so with those produced at the beginning of the following period. Therefore, in the study of the development of pottery, special attention should be paid to the pottery produced by the end of each period.
