英文摘要:Caojiagang is situated about 4.5 km southeast of Herong Township of Dangyang County, Hubei Prov., and only 5 km away from the confluence of the Ju and Zhang Rivers. Topographically Caojiagang looks more or less like a cross-shaped small hill and Tomb No. 5 is located on the western side of the hill ridge, a little to the north. It was excavated in October of 1984. The tomb is a rectangular earth pit, oriented to 94° containing a wooden chamber. The opening of the tomb is roughly trapezoid and measures 9 m long, 8 m wide and the pit is 7.6 m deep. The upper part of the pit is filled with mixed earth that is rammed compact; the lower part and the space around the chamber are filled with grey clay. In the chamber there is a double coffin for the owner, accompanied by two single coffins. Two meters away from the eastern side of the tomb there is an additional burial pit, destroyed by the water of a pond. The form of this pit is unknown and 10 pieces of bronzes were unearthed from it.Tomb No. 5 was. robbed in the past and has been seriously damaged. The three coffins have been shifted from their original positions and the skeletons in them are disordered and rotten in part. Observation of the human remains says that the corpses were originally laid in an extended supine position, with the heads pointing to the east and the feet to the west. Despite the robbery of the tomb, precious relics, such as metal ornaments and leather pieces of the coat of mail, musical instruments and bronzes, were unearthed from it. In addition, nearly 1000 pieces of weapons harness and trappings, and jade, bamboo and wooden objects were found in it.Judging from the shape of the tomb and the characteristics of the relics, the tomb can be dated to the late Spring and Autumn Period.
