英文摘要：The summer of 1937 witnessed the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. As Japanese troops advanced through the lower Yangtze valley, they committed atrocities, which culminated in cruelty and scale at Nanjing after its fall, with rampant mass executions, raping, looting, and burning. Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary educator in the fallen city, responded to the carnage with courage and bravery. She turned her Ginling College campus into a refugee center to provide shelter, food, and protection for ten thousand terror-stricken women and children, She worked hard and persistently even at the risk of her own safety. Her courage under the reign of terror distinguished itself to such an extent that she was remembered as the goddess at the Nanjing Massacre after her tragic death.
